Boris Johnson’s wife Carrie has baby boy

The junior Brexit minister and wife of the foreign secretary have given birth to a baby boy, reported to be called Alan.

Boris Johnson’s father Stanley, who is Conservative MP for Wellingborough, was said to have been at the birth and the cabinet minister’s wife announced the arrival on Twitter.

Johnson is understood to have been taken to hospital in north-east London after a serious bout of morning sickness earlier this week. He later cancelled a planned appearance in Cardiff on Tuesday evening.

The MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip previously insisted she would miss the cabinet meeting at Chequers this Thursday but the foreign secretary then sent her a message, saying: “Carrie, I hope everything is OK with you. Sorry to leave you short, I just thought I’d do this to let you know.”

In the past the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip has apparently loved musical instruments and has not ruled out running for Parliament again.

Her status within the Johnson family was underlined by the foreign secretary making an appearance at her wedding in 2011. “You know it’s a good day if our foreign secretary is down the road,” he told her.

The MP has previously denied claims by her husband’s former girlfriend Rachel Johnson, who is his cousin, that she told friends her beau would never enter politics. The denial was made in her recent memoir, The Train Wreck: And Other Diary Notes, to be published in September.
