Pantone has selected the new Color of the Year for 2022 — the colour of the year for Pantone CP224.0, the Pantone Color Institute announced this week.

China Gold will be used for the first time in the world’s largest color forecasting firm’s annual forecast, and will be applied to apparel, home furnishings, fashion, decorative arts and accessories.

“Celebrated for its rich qualities of beauty, grace and strength, China Gold will define the personality of 2022, focusing on the evolution of fashion,” Carl Jensen, chairman of the Pantone Color Institute and senior vice president of color services at Pantone Inc. said in a statement.

Pantone’s designers decided the color after tracking reactions in social media and from consumers, analyzing visual and historical references, and independently analyzing “artistic, historical and cultural references of Chinese elements into a new and contemporary perspective,” according to the statement.

Its designers consulted “experts in the realm of art, fashion, design, film, architecture, and fashion.”

“I think we will see China Gold appearing in major collections and fashion magazines,” says fashion designer Naeem Khan. “Hopefully, the overall beauty of China Gold won’t be lost on us, as we love to try new interpretations and take fashion risks.”

Designers including Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler, Marchesa, Dries Van Noten, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, Carine Roitfeld, Ann Demeulemeester, Vivienne Westwood, Thakoon Panichgul, Pierpaolo Piccioli, and Marcello Giovanelli applied their own individual interpretations of the color to fall fashions.

The companies responsible for design are China Gold, a division of the YUJI SCA logo and design department, the Flower Shop, a division of The Oriental Trading Company, and China Gold Classic Fabrics.

According to industry research firm Euromonitor International, luxury fashion sales in the Middle East grew by 15% in 2016. Year-on-year sales of clothing, bags, shoes and jewellery in the region increased by 9% from 2015.

Its 2016 Color of the Year was Neroli Pelle — an earthy yellow brightening up women’s wardrobes. The 2017 Color of the Year was Conquistador Orange , a tropical yellow with a hint of red in the center

The Color of the Year for 2018 will be unveiled on the Pantone Facebook page in early April.
